WHAT IS PAT TESTING?

PAT Testing is Portable Appliance Testing, which is an examination of electrical equipment to make sure that it is safe to use.
We carry out a visual inspection 1st to make sure there are no exposed wires or burnt cables . We then use specific PAT Testing equipment to test for Earth Continuity and insulation resistance among others. If the appliance passes it will get a green sticker, a red for a fail and blue for a visual inspection. After all the testing has been completed we will produce an appliance register and certification indicating if items have passed or failed.

The frequency of inspection & testing required will vary depending on the following. The environment - Equipment in a benign environment is likely to suffer less damage than equipment in an arduous environment. The users - If users report damage promptly hazards will be avoided. Conversely, if equipment is likely to receive unreported abuse, more frequent inspection & testing is required. The equipment construction - The safety of Class 1 equipment is dependent upon a connection with earth. Class 2 equipment is not dependent upon a fixed earth. The equipment type - Appliances that are hand-held are more likely to be damaged than fixed appliances.
Portable Appliance Testing ( PAT Testing ) is an essential part of a Health & Safety policy for your business.
The Health & Safety Executive ( HSE ) states that 25% of reported electrical accidents involve portable appliances.
The Electricity at Work Regulations ( EWR ) places legal responsibility on employers & employees to comply with these regulations & as practically possible the duty of care to ensure that no danger results from using electrical equipment.
The Health & Safety at Work Act ( 1974 ) places an obligation on employees where appliances are used, on the public where they may use appliances in places such as Hotels, Hostels, Schools, Shops etc. Where appliances are supplied or hired and where appliances are serviced & repaired. This requires a systematic regular programme of maintenance, inspection & testing of Portable Appliances.
A fine of £5,000 per item not complying with regulations.Six month's imprisonment Possible charges of manslaughter in the even of deaths Landlords -The Tenant may also sue you for civil damages Employers - the employee could claim against you Your property insurance or Public Liability Insurance may be invalid

What is the difference between a class 1 appliance and a class 2 appliance

When PAT Testing Class 1 appliances, the Earth Continuity and Insulation Resistance tests are carried out. In a Class 2 appliance, the user is protected by at least two layers of insulation. For this reason, Class 2appliances are also known as Double Insulated. They do not require an Earth connection

For more information please contact Croydon Pat testing

How many items can be PAT tested in the day

A qualified and experienced PAT tester can test properly on average 150 items per day in an industrial setting and up to 300 items per day in an office

Please contact Croydon Pat testing for more information
Battery powered testers can be used on construction sites, and there is no risk of damaging equipment, however most can only perform a low current earth continuity test. For 110V site equipment, a high current earth bond test is preferable. For regularly testing 110V equipment, dual voltage PAT testers are available.

Class 1 appliances

Class 1 (metal) test
This means that it depends on a combination of insulation and an earth connection to protect the user from an electric shock. During PAT testing we need to carry out the Earth Continuity and Insulation Resistance test. The kettle is plugged into the PAT tester.

All equipment with a UK plug should be Pat tested

It makes you believe that only portable appliances need to be tested when in fact it is recommended that anything with a plug is 'maintained' to ensure that it is safe. These appliances come in different classifications such as Portable, Stationary, Moveable, Hand Held, IT and Fixed.

Please visit Croydon Pat testing for more information
if you have an appliance that has a plug that is intended to be connected to a wall socket or generator, it qualifies as needing to be PAT tested. This can include items such as electric drills, monitors, printers, PCs, kettles and larger items like photocopiers, vending machines and fridge freezers
For more information please contact us at Croydon Pat testing

Legally, in order to adhere to these regulations

Legally, in order to adhere to these regulations the person carrying out the PAT testing must have adequate training in how the process is carried out. Technically anyone can carry out PAT testing, but they must have the necessary training to deem them suitable for carrying out the work.

The type of electrical appliance, the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used essentially determines the level of inspection and testingrequired. PAT testing involves complex procedures that involve many multiple examinations with multiple variables.

For more information please visit Croydon Pat testing for more information
A Pat Test is a routine inspection of some types of electrical appliance to they are safe to use. Its purpose is to prevent electrical accidents in the workplace. ... Some appliances only need a reduced test, called a PAT insulation test
